Tobias Guitars
was started in Orlando, Florida in April 1977. The first serial
number was 0178 - January 1978. After 578, I went back to 179. My
first shop name was The Guitar Shop. I sold that business in 1980 and
moved to San Francisco to be partners in a short-lived manufacturing
business called Sierra Guitars. We made about 50 instruments. I left
S.F. in May of '81 and started a repair shop in Costa Mesa, Ca.

MTD American
basses are all 35" scale, 21 fret (plus 0 fret, 24 frets
optional) bolt-on neck basses. These basses are available in 4, 5, 6,
and 7 string configurations. The necks and bodies are available in a
variety of combinations. The standard finish is a catalyzed acrylic
urethane satin that looks and feels a lot like oil but is many times
harder without building great thickness. This allows the bass to
breathe, sounding more wooden. The bodies and necks are ergonomically
carved to allow comfortable access to the extended scale bass.
